Show off your impeccable taste with this stunner of a set of Murano bullicante bookends.  These lovelies are the dreamiest shade of aqua blue with layers of gold leaf. Each piece has a flat edge on the bottom and side (for a super clean edge to rest against books). Add this set to your curated book shelf or display as sculptural décor on your coffee table.

The bullicante technique became famous in the 1930's. This technique is applied to glass that is exceptionally thick. It entails layering numerous air bubble layers inside the vitreous wall in a grid arrangement. The blowpipe is then used to pull this mass, leaving on its surface a series of small depressions that are imprinted in a regular pattern. After perfecting the method, artisans went as far as to embellish the inner layers with gold leaf and other colors, increasing the value and distinctiveness of each work.

These bubbles were reminiscent of the bubbles seen when boiling water, thus the literal meaning of the word bullicante: boiling.

Like any other Murano Glass method, this one will be treasured by art enthusiasts and people who value the artistry and beauty of handcrafting. The longstanding legacy of glass-making in Murano, the caliber and uniqueness of its artists, and the pre-Medieval origins of Venice's most prestigious trade all contribute to the knowledge and expertise needed to produce beautiful bullicante works.
